The modern biomass heating sector, which operates technologically advanced equipment, generated a business volume of 93.2 million euros in Catalonia in 2018, according to the Annual Report of the Biomass Observatory managed by the Spanish Association for Energy Valorization of Biomass (Avebiom).
At the end of 2018, 27,588 stoves and boilers were operating in the region, with a nominal power of 1,152 MW. The manufacturing and marketing of the new equipment, as well as the maintenance and sale of solid biofuels, among others, generated an activity that employs 981 people.
Regarding the energy consumed by the biomass equipment, it amounted to 151.5 KTEP, which has allowed the equivalent savings of 176.5 million liters of diesel in 2018.
The sector's contribution to the greenhouse gas reduction strategy is also relevant, since the more than 27,500 biomass equipment installed in Catalonia avoided the emission of 468,299 tons of CO 2 , similar to the pollution produced in a year by 312,200. passenger cars, 5.6% of all Catalan vehicle fleet.
300,000 stoves and boilers throughout Spain
According to the Avebiom Biomass Observatory Report, the sector generated a business throughout Spain of 870 million in 2018 (1.7%), which allowed the creation of 950 new jobs (11 % more), until reaching the figure of 9,600 employed people.
At the end of the year there were 298,400 heating installations powered by biomass in operation, 53,480 more than the previous year.
Expobiomasa 2019
On the occasion of the ten years of activity of the Biomass Observatory in Spain, Avebiom will present a report on the evolution of the sector and its contribution to the fight against the emission of greenhouse gases from the use of fossil fuels, such as diesel or natural gas, which negatively affect climate change. The presentation will take place within the framework of Expobiomasa 2019, whose twelfth edition will take place from September 24 to 26 at the Valladolid Fair.
This year, 500 exhibiting companies from 30 countries will participate in the event, dedicated to the manufacture of forestry machinery, wood recycling, pellet factories, manufacturers of industrial boilers, energy cogeneration equipment (heat and electricity), auxiliary industry, as well as as the leading brands of boilers and stoves for domestic use.
