Junkers water heater won't turn on: causes in order and how to fix it (miniMAXX, Celsius, HydroPower)

You turn on the hot water tap and your Junkers doesn't ignite, or it clicks, or the LED flashes, or it starts and then shuts off after a few seconds. Before thinking about the circuit board or calling a technician, there's one thing to know: in most cases where a water heater "won't ignite," the problem isn't with the heater itself, but with the water supply: insufficient water, insufficient gas, or insufficient electricity.

In this guide we review the causes in order, from what can be fixed in a minute to what needs a part, and what the Junkers technical manual says for the miniMAXX, miniMAXX Excellence, HydroPower-Plus and Celsius.

Quick summary

  • It does nothing when you turn on the tap: insufficient water flow, dirty filter, dead batteries or the heater membrane (in older models).
  • It sparks but doesn't ignite: lack of gas or electrode. This is error code EA.
  • Turns on and off: low flow, overtemperature (E1, E9), pressure switch or flue gas outlet (A4, C2).
  • First: fully open the hot water tap, without mixing it with cold, and try another tap.

1. Water: the number one cause

A water heater only turns on when it detects a minimum amount of water flowing through it. If that minimum isn't reached, it won't even try. The miniMAXX manual itself states this: if ignition is slow or the LED is flashing, the cause is insufficient water flow. Check:

  • The mixing tap. If you only open it halfway or mix too much with cold water, the water heater won't get enough hot water. Try opening the hot water tap fully.
  • The faucet aerator and shower head. Limescale clogs them and reduces water flow. If the problem is only with one faucet, start there.
  • The water inlet filter of the water heater. The Celsius manual specifically mentions it. It gets clogged with grit, especially after construction work or water outages.
  • Mains water pressure. If there is low water pressure throughout the building, the water heater will suffer.

One detail about the miniMAXX: if it detects water flow just as you turn on the main switch, it will display F0. This is not a malfunction: simply turn off the tap, turn the switch off, and then turn it back on.

2. The power source: batteries, hydrogenerator or grid

The heaters need electricity for the spark and the electronics. Depending on the model, they get it from:

  • Batteries: If it makes a weak clicking sound or doesn't do anything, change them first. It's the cheapest and most common repair.
  • Hydro generator: a small turbine that generates electricity using flowing water. If the flow rate is low, it generates little electricity and the heater won't turn on. Over time, the turbine wears out or becomes clogged with limescale.
  • Power supply: For plugged-in models, check that the plug works and has a ground connection.

3. The membrane (older hydraulic heaters)

water heaters Junkers WR series rubber diaphragm , which in turn opens the gas valve. Over time, the rubber hardens, cracks, or perforates: water still flows through, but no longer has enough force to open the gas valve. The symptom is clear: the water heater either doesn't ignite or only ignites when the tap is fully open. It's a very inexpensive part and one of the most common repairs for these appliances.

4. Gas

  • The gas cylinder is empty or nearly empty. With a low charge, the heater may turn on and off repeatedly.
  • Butane cans are cold. The miniMAXX manual states it clearly: if the cans freeze during use, move them to a warmer location. Also, check the can's regulator.
  • Air in the pipe after changing the gas cylinder or the meter.

If the heater sparks but doesn't ignite, you have all the details in the EA error.

5. It turns on and off

  • E1: The water is coming out too hot (over 85°C). Lower the heater temperature instead of mixing it with cold water.
  • E9: The temperature limiter has activated. Wait approximately 10 minutes and restart. If the problem recurs, refer to the E9 error.
  • A4: The flue gas control device has activated. The flue gas is not venting properly: ventilate the room, wait 10 minutes, and try again. If the problem persists, call a qualified technician: this is a safety issue.
  • C2, C4, C6: pressure switch and gas outlet. We explain it in the pressure switch.
  • CA (HydroPower-Plus): The water flow exceeds the maximum capacity of the appliance. Close the tap slightly.

What does the Junkers technical manual say about the model?

miniMAXX (WR-2)

Does not turn on: switch is off. Slow start or flashing LED: insufficient water flow. Water not hot enough: temperature selector, bottle regulator, or frozen butane tank. Incorrect temperature display: sensor is not making good contact with the heating element.

miniMAXX Excellence (WTD…KME)

A9: Temperature sensor incorrectly installed or very low water inlet pressure. E0: Electronic control box failure, reset and if the problem persists, contact technical service. EA: Gas valve open, purge the gas line, check gas pressure and electrodes.

HydroPower-Plus (WTD…KG)

E0: Electronic control box failure; try turning a hot water tap on and off. CA: Flow rate out of range (between 1.5 and 30 liters per minute). If there are no indications on the display or no code, and the appliance is not working: contact a certified technician.

Celsius and Celsius Plus

unit does not turn on with the fault LED illuminated: check the water inlet filter, the flow sensor cable and connector, and the pressure switch with its pipes and drain (on Celsius Plus, C4, or C6 models). If the unit does not turn on with the LED flashing: check the temperature limiter, water supply (pressure and flow rate), and gas type compatibility (E9). It only works again after the cause is eliminated and the reset button is pressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My water heater only turns on when the tap is fully open. What's wrong with it?

The flow rate is just barely reaching the minimum. Check the aerators and filter. In older hydraulic models, this is a classic symptom of a hardened diaphragm.

It clicks but doesn't turn on.

If the click is weak, try new batteries. If it sparks strongly but doesn't ignite, it's either low on gas or the electrode is faulty: see the EA error.

It works in the kitchen but not in the shower.

The water heater is fine: the shower head or mixer has limescale buildup and is reducing the flow.

How long do I have to wait after getting an E9 or an A4?

Junkers indicates that it takes approximately 10 minutes for the appliance to cool down. If the code recurs, there is an underlying issue that a technician should investigate.
