Error F0, F1, E0, b1, b2, b3 and dd in Junkers: electronic board failures

Your Junkers is displaying F0, E0, or one of the "b" codes , and you'll hear the same thing on any forum: "It's the circuit board, replace it." The electronic circuit board is one of the most expensive parts of the appliance, so it's worth knowing something before you buy it: many F0 and E0 errors aren't fixed with a new board, but rather with a connector, a cable, or by removing moisture. And in some models, the F0 error isn't even an electronic fault.

In this guide we explain what each code means, what to check first (which costs nothing), what the Junkers technical manual says for each family and how to know if the board is really broken.

Quick summary

  • F0: Internal motherboard failure. Before replacing it, check for moisture, connectors, and power cables.
  • Exception, miniMAXX water heater: F0 means that the water heater detected water flow when switched on. Close the tap, switch it off, and switch it back on.
  • E0: Internal circuit board error or low voltage (in the Ceraclass Midi). In water heaters, this is usually resolved by opening and closing the tap or by resetting the unit.
  • F1, b2 and b3: Board data errors. Technician required.
  • b1: Problem with the encoder connector, the part that tells the circuit board which boiler model it is. Typical after replacing the circuit board.
  • dd (EurAcu-Hit): software lock; the manual indicates changing the board.

Why does the motherboard "fail" even though it's not broken?

The electronic board (Junkers calls it Heatronic in many models) monitors its own circuits. When something goes wrong, it protects itself and displays F0 or E0. The problem is that many things external to the board can cause something to go wrong.

1. Humidity

This is the most common cause we see. A drop from a leaking gasket above the electronics box, condensation in a cold kitchen, a safety valve discharging water nearby, or a steamy kitchen. The humidity creates tiny current leaks that the circuit board interprets as an internal fault. Signs: the error appears in the morning or on humid days and disappears when it dries. Look for traces of green rust on the connectors or watermarks on the cover.

2. Loose or rusty connectors

Over time and with heat, the connectors loosen or corrode. The Junkers manual emphasizes this for the F0: check the contacts are securely attached. Disconnecting, cleaning, and reconnecting each pin (with the appliance unplugged) resolves more circuit board faults than you might think.

3. Ignition cables

It's a subtle issue: the high-voltage cable going to the ignition electrode generates sparks of thousands of volts. If it's cracked or poorly connected, the spark escapes and produces interference that resets the ignition system. The result: an F0 error code that appears just as you try to start the engine. That's why the manual for several vehicle families recommends checking the ignition cables when an F0 error code appears. If you want to know more about ignition systems, we explain it in the EA error Junkers.

4. Voltage and grounding

Low voltage, a faulty power strip, a shared outlet with a high-power appliance, or a poor ground connection. On the Ceraclass Midi, E0 directly indicates low voltage, and for the Celsius Plus, the manual advises checking the 220V supply and ground connection before handling the electronics. After a storm or power outage, the board may also simply need to be reset.

5. The license plate, finally

If, after checking everything above, the error persists, or the board has burnt components (dark spots, bulging capacitors, a burning smell), then it is indeed faulty. In that case, the entire board must be replaced, or, in some models, the bus module.

F0 on the miniMAXX heater: it's not the plate

On the miniMAXX (WR-2) water heater, the F0 error code has a completely different meaning: the heater has detected water flow when it was switched on. Simply close all hot water taps, turn off the heater, and turn it back on. If the F0 error code reappears with the taps closed, check if any tap, thermostatic cistern, or valve is allowing hot water to flow without your knowledge.

E0: plate or voltage

  • Ceraclass Midi: Low electrical voltage. Check power supply voltage and frequency.
  • miniMAXX: internal board error.
  • HydroPower-Plus: Electronic control unit error. The manufacturer recommends opening and closing the hot water tap to reset it.
  • miniMAXX Excellence: Electronic gearbox error: Reset and, if it persists, contact technical service.
  • Celsius Plus: device locked with E0 (or F7, FA): check 220V and ground connection, that there is no ionization before switching on and, if it persists, replace the electronics.

Codes b1, b2, b3 and F1: data and encoder

Many Junkers are universal: the same board works for several models, and what tells you what boiler it is (power, type of gas, whether it is mixed or heating only) is a small piece plugged into it: the encoder connector.

  • b1: The encoder is missing, incorrectly connected, or not being read. The most typical case: the board has been replaced and the encoder hasn't been transferred from the old one to the new one, or one from a different model has been installed. The manual instructs you to install it, measure it, and, if necessary, replace it.
  • b2 and b3: Internal data errors. Requires a technician with diagnostic tools.
  • F1 (Cerapur family): Data error. Also technical.

dd: software lock (EurAcu-Hit)

On the EurAcu-Hit (ZWSE 23-4 MFK, ZWC 28-4 MFA), the "dd" error indicates that the motherboard has been locked by software. The manual is unequivocal: replace the motherboard.

If your Junkers doesn't have a screen

On the Ceraline Acu (ZWSE 28-5), five flashes of the indicator light indicate an internal fault: check the connections, ignition cables, and circuit board. You can find detailed instructions in the Ceraline Acu indicator light flashing.

What does the Junkers technical manual say about the model?

Eur

F0: Internal fault in the printed circuit board. Check the contact and ignition wire connections and the bus module; if the problem persists, replace the printed circuit board or the bus module. b1: Encoder connector: install, measure, and replace if necessary.

EurAcu-Hit

F0: Internal error, which may also appear during the smoke probe connection test (AGÜ); if it persists, replace the main board. dd: Software lock, replace the board. b1: Encoder connector.

Ceraclass Midi

F0: Internal board error; check connections and cables inside the electronic box and, if the problem persists, replace the board. E0: Low electrical voltage.

Ceraclass Excellence / Cerastar

F0: Internal fault. b1: Coded connector.

Cerapur, Cerapur Comfort, Excellence and Acu (condensation)

F0: Internal fault; check contacts, ignition cables, circuit board, and gas/air ratio. F1, b2, and b3: Data errors, technician. b1: Coded connector.

Heaters

miniMAXX: F0 due to water flow on startup, E0 board error. HydroPower-Plus and miniMAXX Excellence: E0 in the electronic control box. Celsius Plus: E0 with lockout, check voltage and ground.

What you can do (and what you can't)

Yes you can:

  • Unplug the device for a couple of minutes and plug it back in (electrical reset).
  • Check for leaks or moisture on the boiler or heater.
  • Plug it directly into the wall, without power strips.
  • Note when the error occurs (when turning it on, in the morning, in the rain, etc.). This is the best clue for the technician.

You shouldn't:

  • Open the electronic box with the device connected.
  • Dry the board with a very hot hairdryer or with products that are not specifically for electronics.
  • Changing the board without passing the encoder or without checking that the reference is correct for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair the motherboard instead of replacing it?

Sometimes it's possible: some electronics workshops repair boiler circuit boards (cold solder joints, relays, capacitors). It's cheaper, but it takes longer and isn't always possible. What doesn't make sense is paying for either option without first ruling out moisture and faulty connectors.

I replaced the motherboard and now it says b1. Did they send me the wrong motherboard?

Almost certainly not: the encoder connector from the old board needs to be transferred to the new one, or it's plugged in incorrectly.

The F0 code appears only when I try to turn it on. Why?

This is very typical of a faulty ignition cable or electrode: the spark causes interference that the ignition system interprets as an internal problem. Check the ignition system before checking the ignition system.
