If your Samsung washing machine displays error code 4C (or its equivalent 4E on some models), it's because the appliance isn't receiving water quickly enough. According to Samsung's official documentation, this is almost always a water supply issue, not a serious malfunction of the electronic control board, so in most cases it can be fixed at home in just a few minutes.
Cause 1: Inlet hose kinked or blocked
This is the most common cause. Check the section of hose between the tap and the back of the washing machine: if it's twisted, squashed against the wall, or pinched when you move the appliance, the water pressure won't be sufficient.
Cause 2: Supply tap not fully open or low pressure
Check that the tap supplying water to the washing machine is fully open. If you live in an area with low water pressure, or if another part of the house is also using water, the problem may occur intermittently.
Cause 3: Clogged mesh filters
At the hose connection, both at the tap and the washing machine, there are very fine mesh filters that trap particles and limescale. With the tap closed, disconnect the hose, remove the filters with small pliers, and clean them under running water. Samsung recommends cleaning them at least twice a year to prevent this from happening again.
Cause 4: Clogged detergent drawer
Remnants of fabric softener or clumpy detergent can block the water flow to the drum. Remove the drawer completely (usually by pressing a tab inside) and clean it with hot water and a small brush.
How to proceed step by step
- Disconnect the washing machine from the power supply and close the water inlet tap.
- Disconnect the inlet hose at both ends and check that it is not kinked or damaged.
- Remove and clean the mesh filters at both ends under the tap.
- Clean the detergent drawer completely.
- Reconnect everything, turn on the tap and check that the water pressure is normal before plugging in the washing machine.
If after these steps the 4C/4E code still appears with the tap fully open and the hose in good condition, it is time for a technician to check the water inlet solenoid valve, which if it is faulty cannot be safely repaired at home.
