If your clothes come out of the washing machine smelling musty or moldy instead of clean, the problem is almost never the detergent you're using, but the washing machine itself: there's stagnant water and accumulated organic matter somewhere in the system, and that damp, enclosed environment is the perfect breeding ground for mold. The good news is that, except in very advanced cases, it can be solved with a thorough cleaning and without needing any replacement parts.
Cause 1: Dirty door seal (by far the most common cause)
Lint, detergent residue, and water that doesn't fully dry accumulate in the folds of the rubber seal around the door, forming visible mold in the form of black spots. Lift the edge of the seal with your hand and check inside: if you see dark stains, that's the source of the smell.
Cause 2: Detergent drawer with accumulated residue
Compacted fabric softener and detergent residue in the drawer compartments also generate unpleasant odors over time, and this stale air is transferred to the clothes during washing.
Cause 3: Frequent washing at low temperatures
Washing at 30-40°C is more economical and takes care of clothes, but it does not eliminate bacteria and grease residue that accumulate in the drum and heating element with each cycle.
Cause 4: Uncleaned pump filter
The filter retains lint, hair, and small debris which, if never cleaned, rot inside the filter and generate an odor that is especially noticeable when opening the lower flap.
Cause 5: Door closed between washes
Closing the door immediately after the program finishes leaves the moisture trapped inside the drum and the rubber seal without a chance to dry, promoting mold day after day.
How to eliminate odor step by step
- Clean the door seal with a cloth and a mixture of warm water with a little bleach suitable for this use (or white vinegar if you prefer to avoid bleach), paying special attention to the inner folds.
- Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in hot water before brushing.
- Clean the pump filter (front lower hatch) following the same process as for a drain failure.
- Do an empty wash on the hottest program your washing machine allows (90°C if it has that option) with a specific washing machine cleaner or, failing that, with white vinegar or baking soda.
- From now on, leave the door and drawer ajar between washes, and repeat the empty wash at high temperature once a month.
If the smell persists after a thorough cleaning, the rubber may be deteriorated internally and need replacing; in that case, it is advisable to check the actual condition of the part before deciding whether it is worth replacing or not.
