When the washing machine shows no signs of life—no lights, no sound, nothing—when you press the power button, it's best to rule out possible causes, starting with the simplest and cheapest and progressing to the most complex, before assuming there's a serious problem. Cause 1: The plug or power outlet

If other appliances in the same area aren't working either, it's likely that the circuit breaker in the electrical panel has tripped, sometimes caused by the washing machine itself if it has an internal electrical leak. Check the panel before investigating the appliance further.
Cause 3: Door not properly closed or door safety switch malfunctioning
Washing machines won't start if the system doesn't detect that the door is properly closed. Open and close it firmly; if you don't hear the usual clicking sound, the safety switch itself may be faulty.
Cause 4: Child safety lock activated
Many models have a button combination (often requiring you to hold down two buttons for several seconds) that locks the control panel. Consult your specific model's manual to learn how to disable it; it's a very common issue and easily resolved.
