Engie Spain and Kao Corporation have signed an agreement for the construction, financing, start-up, operation and maintenance for 15 years of a new thermal energy generation plant from biomass from certified forest waste , ensuring the sustainable management of the forests, at the chemical company plant located in Olesa de Montserrat, Barcelona. This new installation will allow a 95% reduction in the factory's natural gas consumption, and therefore the carbon footprint of direct emissions.
The new biomass plant will be used for self-consumption and as thermal energy generation equipment whose primary source, forestry waste, is 100% renewable and neutral in CO2 emissions . This technology will replace a series of conventional boilers, whose primary energy source is natural gas.
To achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction, Kao is carrying out a series of mitigation projects as part of its roadmap . The new thermal energy generation plant represents a great advance to achieve this commitment.
The future biomass plant will also generate a positive impact on the local environment by promoting sustainable forest management , including fire prevention and improving the state of forests, contributing to local social and economic development and reducing external energy dependence, as it is an indigenous and local fuel.
ENGIE will be responsible for the design, construction, operation, maintenance and financing of the project, embodied in a long-term contract, to supply renewable energy to KAO Corporation SAU. ENGIE will supply 95% of the customer's steam demand through the deployment of a biomass boiler.
