Javier Díaz, president of AVEBIOM, spoke with Minister García Tejerina during the official presentation day of the CLIMA projects at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
In his presentation, Díaz highlighted the enormous potential of biomass to reduce CO2 emissions and shared the data collected in the Biomass Boiler Observatory that AVEBIOM has coordinated for 4 years: at this moment there are nearly 6,000 thermal MW installed in Spain, which generates a reduction in emissions of about 2,658,000 tons of CO2 per year.
AVEBIOM foresees a growth of about 1,000 thermal MW each year, which would imply continuing to reduce emissions by around 440,000 more tons each year. With these reductions, in 2020 the emission of about 5,000,000 tons of CO2 would be avoided, Javier Díaz said in his speech.
CLIMA Projects continue to gain popularity among companies committed to reducing emissions. Minister García Tejerina announced that in the next call she will quadruple the financial allocation compared to the first call, up to 15 million euros, and will increase the price paid for tons of verified CO2 reductions to €9.70/tCO2. Among the 42 selected projects, many related to bioenergy, highlighting the programmatic scheme presented one more year by AVEBIOM under the name of Canal CLIMA.
This program of activities has allowed its members to simplify their access to CLIMA projects and maximize the chances of being selected, by integrating a significant number of promoters into the same program.
This programmatic approach allows the incorporation of new associates and facilities in successive calls in the years of duration of the contract for the purchase of tons of CO2 from verified reductions signed with FES-CO2 in February 2014. At this time there are 18 member companies of AVEBIOM adhered and 120 registered facilities.
Companies obtain an economic return for their bioenergy facilities, with AVEBIOM assuming the coordination, monitoring and verification tasks, in collaboration with Tecnalia and the Green Cube.
The AVEBIOM CLIMATE Channel will avoid, with the First and Second Activity of the CLIMA CANAL Program presented so far, more than 110,000 tons and, says Díaz, “we are convinced that we will be able to reach 265,290 tons of CO2 of verified reductions established as the ceiling of the contract with FES-CO2”.
Biomass in your Home
The president of AVEBIOM took the opportunity to announce the imminent launch of a traveling event to bring biomass closer to citizens that will tour 30 Spanish cities under the name “Biomass in Your Home”, starting with Valladolid, bioenergy capital of the country thanks to the international event Expobiomasa.
In his farewell, and after thanking the representatives of the Ministry for the continuity of the CLIMA Projects to encourage a low-carbon productive economy, Díaz suggested the implementation of a tax on those who emit, as is done in other countries such as Sweden.
