Veolia produced more than 80,000 tons of biomass in 2019

Veolia continues to support the use of biomass as a source of economical and environmentally friendly renewable energy, because it reduces CO 2 emitted into the atmosphere. In fact, in 2019 the company - through its subsidiary Veolia Biomasa España - managed to produce 80,700 tons of biomass, 3% more than the previous year.

Veolia Biomasa Spain was born in 2010 with the aim of working with a clean and environmentally sustainable fuel such as biomass. In addition, it works in different areas of Spain creating firebreak strips and areas, through directed and clean felling of forest mass, which facilitates protection and extinction work in the event of fire. Many of the areas in which Veolia Biomasa España works are located in Castilla-La Mancha, specifically, in the province of Cuenca. The most recent case is the cleaning and use of biomass in the municipality of Barchín del Hoyo, where a major fire took place last summer. The cutting and removal of the burned forest mass is essential to facilitate the regeneration and recovery of the environment.

Precisely, the forest chips generated as a result of these forest clearing works are used for the production of thermal energy in Veolia facilities intended for homes and industries. One of Veolia's main biomass heat networks is Móstoles Ecoenergía, a plant located south of Madrid that supplies heating and domestic hot water to 2,500 homes in Móstoles. This heat network reduces the energy cost of the neighbors it serves by 15% and avoids the emission of 9,000 tons of CO2.

Veolia also manages the biomass heating and cooling network of Ecoenergies Barcelona, which supplies thermal energy to residential, industrial and tertiary sector clients in Barcelona and l'Hospitalet de Llobregat. This network, which integrates solutions 3.7 times more efficient than conventional ones, allows a saving of 1% of the electricity consumption of the city of Barcelona and reduces its carbon footprint, since it avoids the emission of 13,400 tons of CO emissions 2 every year.
