Reolum, a company specialized in the promotion and development of renewable energies, has been awarded 46.1 MW in the third energy auction called by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) held yesterday. The award was for biomass technology and at a price of €106.25 MWh.
Reolum's proposal consists of a biomass plant, with 49.9 MW of power and 370 GWh of annual electrical production, on the old land of the La Robla Thermal Power Plant (León) , a town with an enormous tradition in industrial development and in energy generation.
In parallel and based on its philosophy of promoting a just transition, a synergistic auxiliary fabric will be generated with the Reolum plant, both industrial and services in nature , which will help mitigate the risk of demographic loss as a result of successive plant closures. coal-fired thermal plants in the area.
The La Robla biomass plant will provide important innovations that will improve both its efficiency, reducing production costs , and the magnitude of its environmental values. The latter, already benefiting from the use of biomass, which allows minimizing the risk of fires, maintaining the phytosanitary quality of the forests and their sustainability, are strongly enhanced in the Reolum project thanks to the introduction in the project of several pioneering technical improvements.
Biomass plants, called “base load plants”, can replace gas plants to provide stability to the system and support other more intermittent renewable energies , such as wind and photovoltaics. Therefore, the installation of this type of plants contributes to achieving the European decarbonization objectives, taking advantage of local resources and promoting energy independence and security.
