The European seal that certifies the quality, sustainability and traceability of Mediterranean solid biofuels, BIOmasud , improves access to the most relevant information, both for companies that produce and supply biofuels, and for end users on its recently launched website.
The BIOmasud certification system , which will be 7 years old in 2021, guarantees the final consumer that the product they purchase has been produced in accordance with minimum quality and sustainability parameters . The user who purchases this seal is also protected by a complaints system that the supplier must provide so that they can report incidents.
On the other hand, to guarantee that the product that reaches the consumer is the same as the one that was produced, a traceability platform has been established.
For suppliers, the seal provides them with better positioning among users who are increasingly interested in the quality of the biofuel they use . And a quality and standardized fuel guarantees that the equipment works more efficiently, limiting emissions into the atmosphere, an aspect that is increasingly limited by European regulations.
The trend in the use of wood chips and bone and other Mediterranean solid biofuels is increasing, and so are the regulations that affect their quality and emissions. Pablo Rodero, current president of the European Pellet Council and responsible for certification at AVEBIOM, assures that “certification is the best way to ensure thermal energy consumers a good quality biofuel at a good price, which is why we expect an increase in BIOmasud certificates in the coming years.”
The Mediterranean biofuels for domestic use that BIOmasud certifies are wood pellets, olive pits, wood chips, nut shells, olive and shoot pruning, and also firewood since 2020..
In Spain, there are already 8 certified companies: Energía Sierra Segura (Mediterranean Biofuels), Ecoloma, Ingecor, Peláez Renovables and Combustibles Cabello in olive pits; and Alcolea Biomass Center, Greenalia and Pallet Tama in wood chips. Together they could put up to 150,000 tons of bone and 30,000 tons of certified chips on the market.
The rights to the BIOmasud brand in Spain are held by AVEBIOM and CIEMAT. Soon, the new website will also be available in the official languages of the rest of the countries where the certification is implemented.
