Enso and García-Carrión promote a new biomass thermal generation project

Enso, a renewable energy group specialized in bioenergy, has signed with García-Carrión, the first winery in Europe and the fourth in the world, an agreement for the construction of a biomass plant for thermal supply under the ESE (Energy Services Company) modality . This project represents an important milestone in terms of industrial sustainability and circular economy, since it makes it possible to valorize part of the waste generated in agricultural activity at its Don Simón plant in Huelva and produce 100% renewable energy for its production processes through a transversal approach that includes the entire value chain of the company.

Through the energy services company model, Enso provides García-Carrión with a solution that adapts to its decarbonization plan, replacing its traditional natural gas boilers with biomass boilers . In this way, Enso becomes not only the supplier of thermal energy but also a provider of solutions in the field of energy efficiency and decarbonization for these facilities.

The construction of the project, which is being carried out at the Don Simón plant (Villanueva de los Castillejos, Huelva), will last approximately eight months and its start-up is expected by the end of the first half of 2023 . The facility will generate more than 50,000 tons of saturated steam from biomass annually. In addition, it will promote more sustainable production by avoiding more than 8,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

For its operation, the plant will have an annual consumption of around 10,000 tons of biomass . In this way, Enso will cover 100% of the thermal demand of the industrial process of this plant through the use of completely sustainable biomass and under the SURE certification scheme, which guarantees compliance with all the requirements established by Directive (EU) 2018. /2001 of Renewable Energies and Royal Decree 376/2022, which regulates the sustainability criteria and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels.

The alliance between Enso and García-Carrión arises from the commitment of both groups to the decarbonization of industrial processes and the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals . Furthermore, in line with the 360º sustainability strategy developed by García-Carrión, this collaboration represents a boost to the company's commitment to the circular economy and the reduction of the carbon footprint at its Huelva plant, recognized worldwide. for its technological and sustainable development.
