Biomass, a green energy
Biomass is organic matter that can be produced from forestry waste, woody and herbaceous agricultural waste, waste from forestry and agricultural industries or specific energy crops.
Biomass is a natural and renewable energy source that barely emits CO2 . In fact, when it burns it releases the same amount of CO2 as when it follows its natural course of decomposition in the forest.
The success of sustainable hotels
The consumer is increasingly aware of the responsible use of natural resources, and their leisure and travel moments are no longer left out of this equation. The traveler is now more aware of the footprint they leave, and looks for options that reduce their impact on the planet.
According to an Iberostar survey, nine out of 10 consumers value caring for the environment and local communities as an important factor when choosing accommodation. In short, sustainable tourism increases the traveler's feeling of well-being by promoting their connection with the natural and social environment chosen to experience their vacations.
A recent study by the Weekendesk platform has identified Spain as one of the preferred destinations for the most environmentally friendly tourism. Travel reservations in sustainable hotels or eco-hotels have skyrocketed by 237% in our country so far this year.
Energy savings for the hotel sector
The instability and continuous increases in the price of electricity are a great source of uncertainty and concern for hotel companies.
Energy costs represent approximately 10% to 15% of a hotel's operating expenses , and heating and air conditioning are the main energy consumers. Therefore, the main efforts when making investments in energy savings should be directed towards using more efficient air conditioning technologies.
Biomass is capable of producing a large amount of energy and can also be produced locally, which enables savings in transportation and storage. Biomass can mean significant savings on heating and ACS bills.
The sector has a lot of room for improvement. The European Commission estimates that savings of 15% to 20% on heating are possible; from 5 to 30% in refrigeration; from 40% to 70% in hot water and from 7% to 60% in lighting, in EU hotels.
In short, in a sector as important as tourism in Spain, the implementation of biomass systems guarantees economic savings and improves the customer experience.
