Acciona Energía begins construction of its 50 MW biomass plant in Extremadura

Acciona Energía has held the ceremony to lay the first stone of the Logrosán biomass plant (Extremadura), marking the beginning of its construction. The event was attended by the president of the Government of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, the mayor of Logrosán Juan Carlos Hernández, the president of Acciona, José Manuel Entrecanales, and the CEO of Acciona Energía, Rafael Mateo.

Located 10 kilometers from the urban center of the municipality, the Logrosán biomass plant will have a total surface area of 200,000 square meters, with just over half of the space dedicated to the storage of raw materials. The start of production is scheduled for the second half of 2025 and will reach 376 GWh/year, avoiding the emission of more than 165,000 annual tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Acciona Energía was awarded the construction, operation and maintenance of this biomass plant in the third auction for the granting of the economic regime for renewable energy convened by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which guarantees a sale price of the electricity that the plant produces for 20 years.

The annual consumption of the plant is estimated at 261,000 metric tons per year of biomass of agricultural and forestry origin, mainly from the environment. With this, the plant will boost the region's economy, while contributing to the prevention of fires by encouraging the cleaning and clearing of mountains and pastures. In addition, the biomass plant will generate almost 1,400 direct, indirect and induced jobs throughout its useful life cycle.

The project has support plans to supervise the preservation and regeneration of the flora and fauna of the area, as well as a social impact management program on the plant's surroundings. Among the actions that will be carried out is a training program to encourage the hiring of local personnel, advice and qualification for the agricultural and livestock sector in the area, and an entrepreneurship project aimed at supplying material for the plant.
