More than 40 AVEBIOM companies invest 90 million in biomass to reduce CO2 emissions

A total of 42 companies of the Spanish Energy Valuation Association of Biomass, Avebiom, have invested 89.47 million eurin 140 biomass facilities, which have generated 1,022 jobs with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions.

These actions are part of the Climate projects of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Rural Environment (Mapama) corresponding to the five calls for the period 2013-2017. The president of AVEBIOM, Javier Díaz, explained that "the objective is to advance on the path of transforming the Spanish production system towards a low-carbon model."

The 140 facilities, registered in Canal Clima I and II between 2013 and 2017, have displaced 2.78 million MWh of fossil fuels and 238,678 tons of oil equivalent have been avoided. The most displaced fossil fuel has been natural gas.

In the call corresponding to 2017, Mapama has selected 62 new Climate projects, which will save the emission of three million tons of CO2. Of the total, 70 facilities belonging to 16 companies associated with AVEBIOM have been registered. The Minister of Agriculture, Isabel García Tejerina, presided over the closing of this call on April 9.

“The facilities attached to Canal Clima II of AVEBIOM in the 2017 call have a potential to reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to 3.1% of the global emissions reduction target assigned to Spain, in the diffuse emissions sector” , Javier Díaz has specified.

The FES-CO2 Climate projects, dependent on Mapama, are initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the acquisition of carbon credits linked to projects of this nature.

The association has a purchase right signed with the Carbon Fund for a sustainable FES-CO2 economy of 1.7 million tons of reduced and verified CO2, for biomass and biogas projects, during the period between 2015 and 2022, with a funding ceiling by the Ministry of up to 15 million eur.
