Domestic pellet production in Spain, which has tripled since 2012, has evolved in response to the progressive increase in demand, which has recorded record sales figures since 2014 and will reach 650,000 tons this year.
These are some of the arguments that representatives from across the value chain will address, in order to analyze trends and establish forecasts, at the first edition of the International Conference on the Domestic Pellet Market (CIMEP), convened by the Spanish Association for Energy Valorization of Biomass ( Avebiom ), which will be held within the framework of EXPOBIOMASA'19 on September 25th, in Valladolid.
“CIMEP will be a meeting point where forecasts for Spain will be revealed, as well as market trends in net producing countries (such as Portugal, Russia, Canada and Poland) and in the main consumers and importers, such as Italy and France,” explained Javier Díaz, president of Avebiom .
At CIMEP, discussions will focus on raw materials, the national and international market situation, and the evolution of pellet-consuming facilities, topics that will be addressed by internationally renowned experts.
Specifically, the two most important factors in the evolution of the pellet market will be analyzed. Firstly, the raw material, which will be the subject of a dedicated section featuring representatives from various stakeholders: forestry companies, government agencies, and forest owners. Secondly, the facilities that consume pellets, both in Spain and in Eur.
According to the president of Avebiom, for professionals in the pellet sector, “it is important to be aware of trends, both in the national and international pellet markets, as these set the tone for their activity forecasts.” Above all, he added, “the projected imports from Portugal and other producing countries to Spain, as well as the anticipated exports to Italy and France.”.
The evolution of the national market
National pellet production, which slightly exceeded 200,000 tons in 2012, has evolved steadily, surpassing 400,000 tons in 2014, and approaching 600,000 tons in 2018.
According to estimates from Avebiom and Apropellets, national pellet production, which has reached record figures since 2012, will exceed 700,000 tons this year and is expected to be around one million tons in 2021.
This increase reflects a surge in consumption that reached almost 400,000 tons in 2012, although it slowed in 2013, before resuming steady growth from that year until 2018, when sales figures approached 600,000 tons. According to data from Avebiom and Apropellets, 2019 sales are expected to be around 650,000 tons.
