For the fourth year we celebrate our Bioenergy Day, as 21 other EU states have already done, highlighting the enormous biomass potential of Spain and its strategic contribution to the success of the energy transition underway.
The Euroenergy EurOpeo day took place on November 13, 4 days before in 2019. Spain could also advance in more than a week the date of celebration, thanks to the positive trend that the thermal facilities with biomass maintain, backed by an increase in the availability of sustainable biofuels and for a more determined support of the administrations in the framework of the Law of Climate Change and Energy Transition.
According to the data of the Biomass Observatory, in 2019 almost 10% more biomass technified equipment were installed (not counting the firewood) than the previous year and already add 357,000 units and 11,570 MW of power generating thermal energy . Bioenergy employed more than 10,600 people and generated in 2019 a business volume exceeding 920 million eur .
With the aim of increasing the real availability of biomass, AVEBIOM has just presented the first draft of the strategic plan for agrobiomass , whose enormous potential remains largely untapped. Forged thanks to the AgroBioHeat project, the document includes the vision of a large number of actors and aims to be the springboard that drives the use of this important energy resource in Spain from 2021 onwards. It was presented in an online workshop open on November 26, whose broadcast can be seen again on the association's website.
Award to a biomass guru
As the cherry on top of this day of celebration, we wanted to especially thank Dr. Christian Rakos, current president of the World Bioenergy Association, for his commitment to the dissemination and development of the solid biomass sector for energy uses in Spain for the last 16 years, giving it the Promote Bioenergy 2020 award .
In a video message, Javier Díaz, president of AVEBIOM, presented the award virtually, highlighting the great relationship that has existed since 2004 between the Association and Rakos, “a biomass guru, who has helped a lot to the development of the biomass in Spain”.
Christian Rakos has emphasized the development of the sector that has occurred in Spain in the last 20 years and has recalled that bioenergy will have a very important role in achieving the challenge of replacing all fossil fuels in 2050.
