Enso, a renewable energy group specializing in bioenergy, has signed an agreement with García-Carrión, Eur and the world's fourth largest, for the construction of a biomass plant for thermal energy supply under an Energy Service Company (ESCO) model . This project represents a significant milestone in industrial sustainability and the circular economy, as it allows for the valorization of some of the waste generated by agricultural activity at its Don Simón plant in Huelva and the production of 100% renewable energy for its production processes through a cross-cutting approach that encompasses the company's entire value chain.
Through its energy services company model, Enso provides García-Carrión with a solution tailored to its decarbonization plan, replacing its traditional natural gas boilers with biomass boilers . In this way, Enso becomes not only the supplier of thermal energy but also a provider of energy efficiency and decarbonization solutions for these facilities.
Construction of the project, which is taking place at the Don Simón plant (Villanueva de los Castillejos, Huelva), will last approximately eight months and is expected to be operational by the end of the first half of 2023. The facility will generate more than 50,000 tons of saturated steam annually from biomass. Furthermore, it will promote more sustainable production by preventing more than 8,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
The plant will consume approximately 10,000 tons of biomass annually for its operation . In this way, Enso will cover 100% of the thermal demand of the plant's industrial process by utilizing fully sustainable biomass under the SURE certification scheme, which guarantees compliance with all the requirements established by Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on Renewable Energy and Royal Decree 376/2022, which regulates the sustainability criteria and greenhouse gas emission reductions for biofuels, bioliquids, and biomass fuels.
The alliance between Enso and García-Carrión stems from both groups' commitment to decarbonizing industrial processes and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals . Furthermore, in line with García-Carrión's 360º sustainability strategy, this collaboration strengthens the company's commitment to the circular economy and reducing the carbon footprint at its Huelva plant, which is recognized worldwide for its technological and sustainable development.
