Ence's energy complex in Huelva has completed the audit process of the Sure certification standard, which guarantees the sustainability of the biomass consumed in the company's Huelva facilities , mainly composed of local fruit trees, by-products from olive farming, prunings from parks and gardens in the surrounding area, and remains of agricultural activity from almond, cotton and fruit trees.
In this way, the company's renewable energy plants with biomass in Huelva have been pioneers in the sector to adapt to the sustainability requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (REDII), a eurregulation that establishes various criteria that all biomass used in the bioenergy sector must meet, focused on ensuring its sustainability, a correct mass balance, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.
Ence's biofactories in Pontevedra and Navia and the company's biomass power generation plants in Mérida, Jaén and Ciudad Real have already obtained this certification, making Ence the first company in Eur to begin verifying the sustainability of its biomass energy production process using this standard .
CEGANOR was the entity responsible for auditing the process, as it is the only Spanish company recognized and authorized by the SURE scheme to perform this service. The certification audits received the express recognition of the verifier, who highlighted Ence Huelva's high degree of implementation of the reference standard, the energy complex's ability to anticipate the new EurDirective, even meeting some requirements before its publication, and the sector leadership demonstrated by Ence throughout the entire process.
Certification of the entire supply chain in the province.
Having already achieved the milestone of certifying its own biomass and directly purchased biomass, the company has begun implementing an Advisory and Collaboration Plan with all suppliers to the Energy Complex in the province and surrounding areas. The goal is to ensure that all agricultural, forestry, and industrial biomass supplied to the plants obtains this certification. To this end, work is already underway to implement training, certification, and certification processes for the entire supply chain.
Ence Huelva's compliance with the Sure standard represents a further step in the company's plan to complete the certification of all its own and directly purchased biomass consumed at its facilities before the end of the second half of the year.
