The University of Valladolid has received this award, presented by the Spanish Association for the Energy Valorization of Biomass (AVEBIOM), for its actions and investments aimed at promoting the energy benefits of biomass. The judging panel, which reviewed the various nominations, highlighted the University of Valladolid's commitment to biomass through the development of several university degrees related to bioenergy, energy efficiency, and sustainability, as well as the installation of biomass-based energy systems across the university's campuses.
Furthermore, it also recognized the “enormous work of teachers and technicians, both in training and in raising awareness among their students and other members of the national and international educational community, regarding the benefits of these biomass energy installations used in the various departments of that academic institution.” Previous recipients of the 'Promoting Bioenergy' award include the Terrassa City Council (2010), IDAE (2011), the Andalusian Energy Agency (2012), the Regional Government of Castile and León (2013), the Climate Change Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (2014), the Galician Regional Government (2015), and NASUVINSA (Navarra Land and Housing Company) (2016).
Innovation Award and two runner-up prizes
. The mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente, also presented the 2017 Innovation Award to the Aragonese company Biocurve, for its wood chip condensing boiler that offers a record power of 200 kW, double that of the largest biomass condensing boiler conceived to date.
The Aragonese company, whose production plant is located in Vizcaya, has developed a highly innovative project: the BCA200 wood chip condensing boiler. Its design optimizes heat exchange in an ultra-compact space and features a self-cleaning rotary burner. The BCA200 offers a remarkable improvement in wood chip efficiency: between 102% and 105%, 10%-15% higher than conventional boilers. Consequently, it also delivers significant fuel savings.
The two runner-up prizes for the 2017 Innovation Award were also presented, awarded to the Austrian company Windhager, recognizing the Zero-Emissions technology of its PuroWIN boiler, for its gasification burner; and to the Italian company Tiemme Electtronica, for the development of its 4Heat project, a Wi-Fi device for the remote control and management of biomass heating systems.
