The consortium formed by Acciona Industrial and Imasa Ingeniería y Proyectos has been awarded the contract for the construction, operation, and maintenance of a 49.9 MW biomass-fired power plant in Cubillos del Sil (León) for 15 years. Construction of the plant is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019.

The project, awarded to Forestalia and the Regional Government of Castile and León, represents a total investment of approximately eur100 million. Under this project, they will be responsible for the construction of the plant under an EPC contract, as well as its operation and maintenance for 15 years.

It will be one of the largest forest biomass plants in the Iberian Peninsula and Southern Eur. The electricity produced by the plant will be enough to power 50,000 homes. The project will create 200 jobs during construction and another 50 during the operational phase, which will last at least 15 years.

The plant will occupy 100,000 square meters and will generate energy from forest biomass. It will be fueled by wood chips, logs, and bales collected in the area and, to a lesser extent, by herbaceous biomass (cereal straw) harvested in the province of León. It will consume 280,000 tons of biomass annually and will contribute to the sustainable forest management of the woodlands of Castile and León.

The project will incorporate the latest technological advancements applied to biomass power plants. In line with the objectives set by the Eur for 2020, it will be a highly efficient power plant with reduced CO2 emissions .
