Castilla y León awards the construction of a 49.9 MW biomass power plant

The consortium formed by Acciona Industrial and Imasa Engineering and Projects has been awarded the construction and operation and maintenance for 15 years of a 49.9 MW biomass electricity generation plant in Cubillos del Sil (León). The completion of the construction of the plant is scheduled for the end of 2019.

The project awarded by Forestalia and the Junta de Castilla y León, has a total investment of approximately 100 million eur. Within this project, they will be in charge of the construction of the plant under an EPC contract, as well as the operation and maintenance of it for 15 years.

It will be one of the largest forest biomass plants of the Iberian Peninsula and southern EurOPA. The electrical energy produced by the plant will be able to give energy to 50,000 homes. The project will mean the creation of 200 jobs during construction, and another 50 for the operation phase for at least 15 years.

The plant will occupy a space of 100,000 square meters and will generate energy from biomass of forest origin. The plant will feed on chips, logs and bales collected in the area and, to a lesser extent, on herbaceous biomass (cereal straw) collected in the province of León. It will involve a consumption of 280,000 tons of biomass per year and will help forest management in the mountains of Castilla y León.

The project will incorporate the latest technological novelties applied to biomass plants for electricity generation. Fulfilling the objectives set by the Eur OPEA Commission for the year 2020, it will be a highly efficient plant in terms of generation and a reduced level of CO ₂ to the atmosphere.
