Nearly 17,500 high-efficiency biomass stoves and boilers were operating in the Community of Madrid at the end of 2018, 23% more than the previous year, according to the 2019 Annual Report of the Biomass Observatory managed by the Spanish Association for Energy Valorization of Biomass (Avebiom).
This increase in technologically advanced biomass installations, which involves the incorporation of almost 3,300 homes and collective use buildings, places the regional sector's business volume at 50.3 million eur.
The manufacture and marketing of the new equipment, as well as the maintenance and sale of solid biofuels, among other things, generated an activity that employs 596 people, 10.7% more than the previous year.
As for the energy consumed by biomass equipment in the Community of Madrid, it amounted to 83.68 KTEP, which has allowed for savings equivalent to almost 97.5 million liters of diesel in 2018.
Also relevant is the sector's contribution to the greenhouse gas reduction strategy, since the 17,492 biomass systems installed in the Community prevented the emission of 258,700 tons of CO2 , similar to the pollution produced in a year by 172,500 passenger cars, 3.5% of the entire vehicle fleet in the region.
