Olive grove biomass

During the 4th meeting of the EurFederation of Olive Oil and Olive Grove Biomass, concerns were raised in the sector regarding how to improve the circular economy of the olive grove sector, as well as the high production levels and difficulty in finding a market for the main olive grove biomass: olive pomace.
The only viable solution currently for Spain is the energy recovery of biomass through the conversion of coal-fired power plants into biomass plants and the construction of new medium-sized plants (less than 15 MW) distributed throughout olive-growing regions. In both cases, the primary biomass would be olive pomace and pruning waste, in addition to forest biomass.
The estimate for the next campaign is that Spain will have 1,500,000 tons , Italy 380,000 tons, Portugal 150,000 tons and Greece 300,000 tons.
Biomass section

I reiterate, it is important to promote the implementation of biomass utilization technologies and systems in the olive sector, as this can provide an additional source of income for farmers and foster economic diversification in rural areas.
Olive grove biomass represents an exciting opportunity for renewable energy production and the sustainable management of agricultural waste. Its utilization can have significant economic and environmental benefits, and it is important to promote its implementation in the olive sector.
