Ence 's renewable energy plant in Puertollano, Biollano, has recently completed the audit process of the SURE verification scheme, which guarantees the sustainability of the generation process using sustainable biomass sources, which are also evaluated. This biomass is sourced locally, consisting mainly of plant waste from crops such as vineyards and olive groves, fruit orchards, and pruning debris from nearby parks and gardens.
In this way, the company's biomass renewable energy plant in Puertollano has validated its pioneering adaptation in the sector to the sustainability requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (REDII), a eurregulation that establishes various criteria that all biomass used in the bioenergy sector must meet, focused on guaranteeing its sustainability, a correct mass balance, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.
This is a further step in Ence's commitment to the sustainability of the biomass it manages. Ence's biofactories in Pontevedra and Navia, and the company's biomass power generation plants in Huelva, Mérida, Jaén, and Ciudad Real, have previously obtained this certification, making Ence the first company in Eurto begin verifying the sustainability of its biomass energy production process using this standard.
Ceganor was the entity responsible for auditing the process, as it is the only Spanish company recognized and authorized by the SURE scheme to perform this service. The certification audits received express recognition from the verifier, who highlighted Ence Puertollano's high degree of implementation of the reference standard, the energy complex's ability to anticipate the new European Directive Eur even meeting some requirements before its publication, and the sector leadership demonstrated by Ence throughout the entire process.
Having already achieved the milestone of certifying its own and directly purchased biomass, the company has begun implementing an Advisory and Collaboration Plan with all suppliers to the Puertollano plant, with the goal of ensuring that all agricultural, forestry, and industrial biomass supplied to the plants obtains this certification. To this end, work is already underway to implement, train, and certify the entire supply chain of partners.
The company is once again at the forefront of biomass sustainability as an energy source, a path it began in 2017 when it unveiled its Decalogue for the Sustainability of Biomass as a Fuel, a pioneering initiative in the Spanish company, launched to guarantee total sustainability in the use of biomass and the care of the environment in its use as an energy source, based on the criteria established by some of the most important environmental organizations in Eur.
Ence is the leading Spanish company in renewable energy production using agroforestry biomass. It has a total generation capacity of 266 MW in its independent power plants, in addition to 112 MW from its pulp mills. Biomass is a renewable and manageable energy source with significant development potential in Spain. Furthermore, it offers substantial environmental advantages, including emissions reduction and a contribution to the transition to a low-carbon energy model, as well as job creation and economic activity in rural areas.
